More than twenty (20) farmers in the Anloga District of the Volta Region have received tomato processing training from the department of agriculture.
As part of the department's pilot program to include farmers in particular farming communities in the area and provide them with skill training, the training took place on Wednesday, October 5, 2022.
The Agric department claims that this will also aid in lowering the district's unemployment rate.
In an interview, Mr. Emmanuel Atika, the district director of agriculture in Anloga, stated that the training is crucial during this busy tomato harvesting season.
He emphasized the need to lessen post-harvest losses, which have throughout the years plagued farmers in the district.According to him, one tomato crate out of every four is thrown away, so the department must teach farmers how to process the raw tomato to stop the loss and give them work.
The training's Anloga District Coordinating Director (DCD), Mr. Emmanuel Dzakpasu, advised attendees to seize the chance to do something on their own.
Speaking to the media following the program, the trainer, Mrs. Agnes Gakpetor, noted that most farmers in the various farming communities typically throw out a greater portion of their rotten tomatoes, which causes them to run at a loss during the peak time of harvesting tomatoes, hence the training.
She also gave women advice on how to make the most of this chance to save money at home.
When speaking with journalists, some participants stated their happiness with the skills training program and encouraged others to do the same in their various areas.
